The film Meshes of the Afternoon is too short. This film is only 14 minutes long. The limit here is 30 minutes. 😉

Another good short films are:

Le Tempestaire - Jean Epstein 1947 - 23 min
Inspiration - Karel Zeman 1949 - 13 min
At Land - Maya Deren 1944 - 15 min
Jammin’ the Blues - Gjon Mili 1944 - 10 min

What good short films from the 1940s do you know?

Our Minds Know EXACTLY What We Need...

... until we get it. Watched this - Ossessione from 1943 - last night, and absolutely LOVED this! I think it may be my first Italian Neorealist film, but I'll certainly be adding more to my queue subito subito!! Any suggestions? Anyone else obsessed with Ossessione?! 😈

It easily cracks my Top 5 films of the 1940s (so far)!

Repo's 1940s Film Rankings
Suspicion (1941)
Rebecca (1940)
Ossessione (1943)
Casablanca (1942)
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
The Uninvited (1944)

Ossessione is a great choice as an entry point, indeed. It's easy to draw parallels to American cinema and film noir.
The neo-realist canon consists of Vittorio De Sica (Ladri di biciclette, Sciuscià), Roberto Rossellini (Roma città aperta, Paisà, Germania anno zero) and Luchino Visconti (Ossessione, La Terra Trema). Can't really go wrong with any of them. If you need a place to start, I guess one could argue that De Sica's more "poetic" and sentimental (but always deeply rooted to reality nonetheless) style is more accessible than Rossellini's more raw, "primitive" approach. Germania anno zero is probably the most "difficult" film of the bunch (there's a great deal of humanity in the first two parts of his trilogy, while this one approaches nihilistic territory) and La Terra Trema the most ambitious (keeps the neo-realist, documentary-like form, but adds an operatic scope and incorporates the Marxist ideology).
Shout-out to Aniki Bóbó (1942), a Portuguese film that foresaw the neo-realist movement.

It might not fit the Academy's definition of a short film by a few seconds ("40 minutes or less, including all credits"), but it has to be Jean Renoir's Partie de campagne anyway. It is truly remarkable how (minor spoiler alert) it captures the full spectrum of the human experience from pure bliss to devastating tragedy despite its simple premise and short running time.
The question is whether it qualifies as a '40s film or not. Based on the available info (shot in 1936 and released in 1946) and according to

Good stuff kokkinos, I would add Bitter Rice (Riso amaro, 1949) by Giuseppe De Santis to the list. Watched it recently, a spectacular neorealist drama/crime movie. Mezmerizing atmosphere and setting, shot by Otello Martelli (La Dolce Vita, Stromboli, Paisan, La Strada...)

Agreed.
Giuseppe De Santis is one of the neglected filmmakers that pushed the boundaries of neo-realism (Luigi Zampa, Alberto Lattuada, Pietro Germi, Carlo Lizzani would be some other names that deserve a mention.)
Even though Riso Amaro is not the most representative sample of neo-realism in a strict sense, it could be viewed as a natural follow-up to Ossessione in many ways, such as the American influence, the theme of desire and the sensual tone, not to mention that De Santis actually co-wrote Ossessione.
