Naturally going to go with my pick here but the Lewis song is solid for sure.
I stumbled onto Turnstile a good decade ago going down one of my many punk rabbit holes, landing on one of their earlier releases Nonstop Feeling, I think on Bandcamp at the time, they weren't even on here at the time so I added them to BEA, made it to my year chart, they were raw for sure but there was something there.
Forgot about that release for awhile until I came across Turnstile again, initially assuming it was a different band, but it turns out it was the same group and they had definitely grown into their sound by Glow On in 2021 (excellent).
And now we have Never Enough from last year, another excellent follow up, not quite hardcore punk, I've seen melodic hardcore used whatever that means, but there's something here that works for me.
I actually probably meant to nominate Dreaming, but in my panic on the way back from holidays to get noms up I said Never Enough, based on the album title, but this is every bit as good.
Yeah, apologies for rambling, I think it's great. _________________
Continuing the theme of being grumpy, Turnstile are a band I should love... but I don't really. They're pretty great live, though, caught half an hour of their show last year. And Never Enough is one of their best songs. I'd never listened to Jeffrey Lewis before, but I have his album of Crass cover songs bookmarked somewhere. Will get to it eventually. DCB & ARS is a really solid tune and gets my vote. _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
I LOVE the lyrics & feels of "DCB & ARS" by Jeffrey Lewis. He/they would be a blast to experience live with a bunch of other drunken brethren & (... would it be sisthren? ) at some dive-y bar in the East Village. It's quintessential NYC. But, Turnstile has one of the freshest Alt Rock sounds in ages. They are creating albums that have the potential to be classics. Albums where it's impossible to choose just one favorite song.
Easy vote here for Turnstile. Just an absolute ALL CAPS banger of song that's getting me excited for the Spring that's just sprung.
But thanks for making me miss my days in NYC. God I loved it there. #nostalgia
I didn't expect either to be close to my liking, but both were pleasantly surprising. Voted for DCB & ARS in the end. _________________ Bob Dylan Charles Mingus
