American Dream (1988) by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

A flat and rather disappointing album especially when you consider the talent available on this album. A shame because there is some potential here but it's let down all around.

Mediocre songs, lacklustre playing and sloppy production.

My rule about these guys is to never expect much after Deja Vu. I think there are three reasons for their decline in quality:

1) Stephen Stills ran out of songs. His writing post Deja Vu has been on a steady tragic downhill trajectory. He and Crosby developed boring fixations on...sailing. Unless you're a pirate, good songs based on sailing are few and far between. On American Dream, Stills had writing credits on only 4 of the 14 songs...all as a co-writer.

2) Stills & Young never really got along. Crosby never really got along with anyone except for Nash.

3) They kept getting back together, which was half of the issue: they also never really were much of a group...it was always like a part time thing. All four of them had solo work they seemed to prefer doing. It always seemed they would get together, record or tour, and then they couldn't wait to get away from each other.

Interesting note: despite all of the problems this album had, it was still the best selling Neil Young album from the decade of the 80's.

I didnโ€™t know that about this being neil youngโ€™s best selling album of the decade. Says a lot for his 80โ€™s output.

Totally agree with your other points. I read shaky, one of Neilโ€™s autobiographies a few years ago and his issues with Stephen come across load and clear.

2e Album (1980) by Francis Lalanne

Beautifully, atmospheric album but, coincidentally, one of my favourite French artists

Boston, Mass (1985) by The Del Fuegos

This was a weird one to find in the crate. Not because it's not a good album, it is, it's just that I was talking to a mate at a gig a few days ago and the Del Fuegos have reformed so a bit of serendipity here.

Very decent album from a very underrated band

Down In The Bunker (1978) by Steve Gibbons Band

The best of the Steve Gibbons albums. Decent renditions of his own works as well as covers from the Brummie rocker

L (1978) by Godley & Creme

Never really got into these guys post 10cc

It's an OK album but feels a little like they are trying too hard. An OK listen. Not sure how aften I'm going to play it TBH

Sweet Old World (1992) by Lucinda Williams

I already own this but still nice to have another copy.

One of Lou's best albums with some cracking songs delivered in her own inimitable style. A great alt-country / americana album
