Tom Lehrer
1928-2025

Tom Lehrer passed away a couple of days ago. He was 97 years old. Lehrer made two studio albums in the 1950's, and three live records in the sixties before retiring from music in the 1970's to concentrate on being a full time math professor at UC Santa Cruz.

His recorded legacy may be small, but oh so memorable. He recorded songs like "Poisoning Pigeons In The Park", "The Vatican Rag", and "(I'm Spending) Hanukkah In Santa Monica". Randy Newman has called him one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, and despite his outdated musical style, his songs remain vital and fresh to this day. His wit was always sharp, and his songs were always perfectly written.

Here's one of his finest works (relevant as always), and here's to one of the greats.

Is there a reason why this topic got unstickied?
Seems it would be more honorable to resticky this topic back in rememberance of those who are gone.

^^^ It also used to be in the Off Topic area of this forum.

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. I like it being in the music area, but yeah, with it being the kind of chat that it is, it should remain at the top.

II see the matter depends on future discussions regarding it.

People keep dying, so it probably should be pinned/stickied to avoid duplicate threads. But I might also point out that most forums I'm familiar with have some sort of "In the News" subforum for things like obituaries and other relevant news/opinion articles published on other websites (including blogs). Some of them even have automated news aggregators. This one doesn't have any of that stuff, which seems like an oversight to me, but maybe that's because I'm so used to seeing it elsewhere.

Anyway, that's what I would do if it were up to me, which it isn't. 😐

Jeannie Seely
1940-2025

Do we still have a lot of work to do here on BEA? We most certainly do. Jeannie Seely had a career that spanned over sixty years. She released seventeen studio albums, and between 1966 and 1977, she had 27 singles reach the top 100 on the US charts. She also holds the distinction of having performed at the Grand Ole Opry 5.397 times...more than anyone ever has. She was known as Miss Country Soul.

Total number of albums by Jeannie Seely on BEA: Zero.

Seely passed away on August 1, 2025 at the age of 85.

Since the album is in the BEA Top Five, it should be noted that Ronnie Rondell Jr., the guy on fire below, passed away on Aug. 12. He was 88 years old...
Paste wrote:
The Wish You Were Here artwork remained his most infamous appearance, done in a shoot by photographer Aubrey Powell. It took 15 takes to complete, and Rondell wore fireproof gear and smothered himself in protective gel. What came of it was not only an image immortalized in Pink Floyd‘s lore forever, but a conversation starter for Rondell, who lived long enough to tell the tale of a shoot more dangerous than any of his on-screen stunts.

RIP Brent Hinds
Lead guitarist of progressive/sludge metal band Mastodon.
(January 16th, 1974 - August 20th 2025)

II began listening to Mastodon only a few months ago. Listened to the technical & sludgy "Leviathan" many times and also to the progressive "Crack the Skye".
They became a new prog-metal fav of mine, along Tool, Porcupine Tree and later on Ilenkus and Disillusion.
"Leviathan" sounds so aggressive for a prog-metal record because of its fast-paced music and drum rolls along some of the recurring time signatures and the Brent's striking guitar riffs.
And then "Crack the Skye" is a soothing prog-metal epic. What a contrast!

Mastodon are among the most well-received metal bands on BEA, based on the positive ratings they've gotten.
Their sound is really amazing! II never thought II could another prog-metal in my favs until II listened to two of their records.

Thank you for the music! 👏 Godspeed 🙏
