Alright, this one is a bit unorthodox, but hear me out...
Nick Drake and Tom Waits tied in the semifinal. Usually, a tie results in a tiebreaker round, but since it was so close to the end I thought that was kind of pointless. Rather, I'd like to just toss the winner of the other semifinal (John Coltrane) in with these two and have an all-out battle for the Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
I realize some of you may be unhappy with this, so I'll add an option to the poll for you to voice your displeasure. If enough people go for that option, we'll do this the normal way. But until then...
It's as easy a vote for Nick Drake against 2 as it would be for 1. Coltrane's a great musician, Wait's is a poet, but Drake is both, and I'd dare say maybe better at both, even in a much smaller sampling of his work. _________________
I just broke the tie in favour of Drake. All three of these men are amazing, all three have impacted me musically, but I grew up with Nick Drake's music thanks to my dad so I think that's what made this vote so easy.
Nick Drake for me. If Mingus had been here then I'd have probably voted for him, but Coltrane is my least favourite of these three (by quite a large margin too, even though I still love quite a lot of his work). Him and Waits both obviously have a huge edge in terms of volume of fantastic material, but all three of Drake's albums are right up there among my very favourites of all-time. If I was told I could only keep one of their discographies, even with the hugely disproportionate numbers, I'd still choose Drake. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. See I think that's the thing, too. We were fortunate to get a LOT of Coltrane albums, and Waits is still with us on what, his fifteenth album? Twentieth? We only got three from Nick with a small assortion of additional songs, and I would argue that all three of those albums are among the very best of all time. I have a soft spot for artists who had very minimal careers and yet released fantastic stuff during them.
It's Coltrane for me, and not just to support my nom. Drake has a lot of gems, but sometimes his stuff is too mawkish for my taste. I have the opposite issue with Waits, who despite being a brilliant storyteller, fails to make a consistent emotional connection with me. This is all relatively speaking, of course, all three are pretty much must-listen for any music lover.
