The voice of everyman, if everyman where hanging out on the wharves singing to sailers, prostitutes, petty thieves and lowlife bar crawlers. A voice that only a one-eyed meth addicted street walker could love but one hell of a lyricist. There's a short list of voices that just suck but they're music is indespensable...Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, David Johansen, early David Byrne...there's a true difference between a great voice and a great rock 'n' roll voice. This is one example. Start with Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, Big Time.
Maybe I do just want to hear the Cookie Monster sing. The Cookie Monster had a unique voice. whatever. Tom Waits is one of the most original voices of all time. Plus Marc Ribot is one hell of a guitar player.
The cookie monster thing is funny (and kinda true of his later stuff) but CM just doesnt have the talent and creativity of The Original Rain Dog! My favorite albums of his all came from the 70s (Small Change, Closing Time, Heart of Sat Night) but you cant deny the magic of Rain Dogs.
Best: Orphans... 2° Rain Dogs
That Cookie Monster comment was MINE;) Thank you!
This is a great artist. He is entertaining in every aspect.
It seems like you either love the music of Tom Waits or you hate it. I don't know about you people but I love it. He is extremely creative and unique. A pioneer of his time and still putting out good material throughout the 90s. He has his own sound and I think his sound is great. Best albums in order: Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, and Bone Machine.
Found this comment on the Internet, and thought it was kinda funny (and true):"If I want to hear the cookie monster sing, I'll just catch an episode of Sesame Street, thanks."
The spell between 1973 "Closing Time" and 1976 "Small Change" is my favourite spell of his
