Hey everyone, I'm new to the site and I love what you've built here!

I thought for a first post I would talk about a topic I may have made up: Rock Facts.
Like some of you (most? all?), I enjoy talking about my opinions on music as if they are objective facts and not the subjective opinions I know them to be. This led me to create my own personal rock "facts". I think it's a neat way to get a feel for where a person is coming from when they are evaluating music.

anyways, without further ado, I present My Rock Facts:

-Pearl Jam is the Greatest American Rock Band of all time
-Tenis their worst album by far.
-Neil Young is the greatest thing ever.
-On the Beach is his best album (I think..)
-Ryan Adams is a modern analogue for Neil Young
-I can't decide between Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Don't make me.
-The first three Deftones albums are the worst three
-As of 2014 The Gaslight Anthem and Portugal. The Man are the two best post-2000 bands out there.
-The Gaslight Anthem have NOT reached their potential.
-I love double albums.
-Hazards of Love is the best Decemberists album.
-The Raconteurs are better than the The White Stripes
-The White Stripes got better with every album.
-Abbey Road is the best side 2 ever.
-On the Beach is the second best.
-R.E.M. is the Second-Greatest American Rock Band of all time.
-Dave Grohl is the second best thing ever.
-Don't miss a Pearl Jam show or a Foo Fighters show.
-I also can't decide between Ænima and Lateralus.
-I like Wyclef's Carnival Vol. II probably more than Wyclef does.
-Stadium Arcadium is the guitar-album guitarists of the future will cite. Despite its stupid name.
-Somehow, side 2 of the Blue Album is better than side 1.
-"The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" off the Red Album is Rivers' magnum opus.
-R.E.M., Metallica, and the Meat Puppets are the only good things to come out of the 80s.
-"Basket Case" was the best thing I'd ever heard the first 10,001 times I hear it.

That's, um, all I've got for now. Let me know what you agree/disagree with and post your "facts" if you're so inclined!

Nah, punk's alive and well. As long as Iggy Pop's still selling me car insurance and Johnny Rotten's still trying to flog me margarine, punk can never die.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I've never been clear as to what is and isn't rock anymore. What is "rock music" in this particular sense?

I wasn't being entirely serious when I said that, it's a callback to an old thread Jhereko made proclaiming rock music to be "dead", in which a former forum regular, Jasonconfused, tried to stand up for rock music not being dead whilst also admitting he hadn't actually listened to any new music released in the past year, thus voiding his own argument. I don't actually believe rock music is dead, though it does feel pretty stagnant at the moment. There aren't too many rock records I've truly loved in the past few years, and in terms of new and interesting sounds it falls some way behind hip-hop and electronic music. Most rock records that are being released to any sort of widespread critical acclaim at the moment tend to be coming from already well-established artists, and I rarely find myself excited by anything you could call "rock music", although I must admit to having a massive soft spot for Iceage and Ought, among a few others. But yeah, I don't really know what constitutes rock music anymore (are certain strands of metal "rock music"? I mean, I really like Conan's latest...), and my statement wasn't intended to be taken seriously in any case.
