I love J. Mascis, I really do, but Eddie Van Halen was one of my guitar idols growing up.

The things this man can do with a guitar

Amazing stuff (the last one is especially impressive to me).

Plus, I saw him live and he was just as incredible and awe-inspiring as I hoped he'd be. Say what you will about the band and their music, but that's all irrelevant. Just listen to the man play guitar.

Twist my arm. Very Happy The David Lee Roth years kick serious ass! Some of the best beer drinking, "boys r back in town" songs out there. Since this may be the only time I get this chance on BEA, I'm gonna rank 'em while I got the chance.

Van Halen
--------------------------
Woman & Children First
Fair Warning
1984
II
------------------------
Diver Down

The Sammy Hagar years suck ass except for 5150.

Agreed, though almost anything is better than the-album-that-shall-not-be-named with Gary Cherone

Mascis. He's got a much more distinctive style, I could instantly go "hey that's mascis" on a tune as much as I could with "hey that's marr". Van Halen doesn't have that. He may be more techinically talented even, but Mascis is far more unique IMO.

Huh? Maybe that is now the case, but I'd say that is more due to how ridiculously copied Eddie is. Like, a billion guitarist came around and aped what Eddie and Rhoads (to a lesser degree) did and now his incredibly INSANELY original guitar sound is being regarded as less unique than Dino Jr's guitarist. I don't feel that is right. It's the same for Robert Johnson or Jimi Hendrix, those dudes and others had just about the most exciting and unique guitar sound and style ever before everyone and their mommas started attempting to interpret that sound.

Obviously I respect your opinion and vote but I just feel to say Mascis has a more unique sound than Van Halen is way off.

And it annoys me that this (relative) scrub is beating EDDIE VAN HALEN in a guitarist tournament.

Damn indie rock loving, hipster ass, hard rock disrespectin', sobs. That wasn't directed at anyone in particular, just me being a little bitch ass. Carry on with your lives everyone.

Eddie Van Halen without a doubt. He's literally the only thing that held that band up. I honestly think Van Halen would of been a much better band if they didn't have a lead vocalist.

EDIT: Aight. What the fuck BEA.
