Only had a taste of Jansch's guitar and I already know it's more provocative than anything Page has done.

I think my thoughts are similar. I've only ever heard 1 album by Jansch, but I find him more compelling than the 6-albums worth of material I've heard from Zeppelin. I don't think I would vote for Jimmy Page no matter who he was against.

I mean, I don't think I'd ever truly be able to vote against Jimmy Page.

The man has influenced me as a guitarist probably more than any other. He just knew where the music needed to go and he took it there. If it was an awesome solo (Heartbreaker), that's where it went, if it just needed to stick with the riff, he kept it there, he kept it simple if it needed to be (Immigrant Song).

And let's not forget he wrote one of the greatest guitar solos of all time in Stairway.

Nice to see the love for Bert in what on paper is a tough match-up. I don't think anyone could ever doubt Page's ability to carve out a good riff/solo, but with Jansch there's emotion, pathos and grit behind every twang and pluck. I also believe him to be technically superior to Page (given that wannabe guitarists could happily knock out Stairway in their local guitar shop but never have the balls to try Angie) but maybe that's just me.

Seeing how Jansch "influenced" Page, you actually were more influenced by Jansch than by any other!

Anyway, Jansch.

Have you heard him live? He can be amazing, especially in the bootlegs.

Led Zeppelin's the band that sent me on my musical journey. I've always written songs, but I only wrote to pass the time before I got into Led Zeppelin. After them, I got serious about it. After I acquired Zeppelin's boxed set, I began listening to the radio more. Zeppelin, and other bands, made me realize I'm missing plenty of great tracks that hardly get on the radio, but appear on albums. So I came here looking for whole albums, and then to other sites like RYM, Last.fm, and Grooveshark. It's all because of Led Zeppelin.

Jimmy, from a personal perspective, is amazing in the bootlegs. I wouldn't say he's my favorite guitarist, but I've heard The Pentangle as well and I can't say I like the guitar work as much. I agree with Hazey on Janschbeing provocative, but voting against Zeppelin isn't something I can do. Zeppelin's a part of my history, and the roots of my musical journey.

EDIT: @Norman, maybe. However, just because one was influenced by an earlier musician, that doesn't mean the earlier is better. Jimmy's and Jansch's styles were different, and I enjoy Jimmy's more.

Both are great bands. I probably enjoy Jacqui McShee's vocals more than Robert Plant.
