I thought this could be a interesting topic of discussion. BEA member all well know compulsive music listeners. While some manage to listen more than 200 new albums a year (No idea how they do it), I wonder what percentage of that music actually is good enough to be revisited in the future?
How much music is just left to rot in your itunes library?

In my personal experience, my continues search for music is to find those gems that really fuckin click in me. Those albums that make me want to listen to them over and over. This happens not very often. I could listen to 10, 20 or 30 new albums without caring too much for them. So at the end many albums are just left there. I know they exist and may remember a thing or two about them, but they are not worthy of my time.

Any thoughts on this?

The more the music the costs the more I will listen. I can force like music thesedays to avoid disappointment in wasting money.

Hit songs matter a lot when it comes to going back. Like if there is no hit song it is harder to go back. Anxious

Very interesting conversation to have here.

I'm the type of person who compulsively listens to new music. I'm somewhere around 300 albums or more from 2014. Many are frequent returns while a handful will never see the light of day again. Back in the 90s or even early 2000s, there's no way I could have done this, but Spotify makes everything easily available, which is both good and bad. Curiosity may lead me away from listening to a favorite album in favor of something.

I have loads of listening time, so I end up listening to a handful of new records a day and also return to a handful of favorites.

I have stacks of cds that I once listened to a ton maybe 10-15 years ago that I'll most likely never pick up again. They will not be accompanying me on my next move.

For the current year, i give each album a few listens before deciding whether i like it or not. If i like it, then i'll listen to it again later on, more often the more i like the album.

The problem i face is that i have SO MUCH music, it's tough to revisit it all. To address this problem, i often come up with projects that take me back in time, revisiting my music from the past along with past music that's "new to my ears". This year, i'm listening to my favorite 800+ albums in order from #1 to the end. (Just finished #517.) Otherwise, i rarely revisit older albums in their entirety -- i'll often listen to the majority of my music catalog on random as I'm keen on variety.

I love experiencing that sensation when an album finally clicks so I'll typically listen to an album until I achieve that. I'm a click addict. For a cheesy but spot on analogy, it's like catching a wave for me. On average that takes about three listens I'd guess. Once an album clicks, I'll keep listening to it for the next few weeks to experience that post-click high and to discover other nuances/secrets that had alluded me pre-click.

If I don't get an album (especially one that's critically appreciated or considered a classic), I'll keep listening unless the album actually starts sounding worse with each listen.

I'm constantly going back into my collection and re-evaluating though. And I suppose, I'd rather have strong & deep relationship with a few albums than the inverse. Most albums in my overall and decades charts from the 70s, 80s, & 90s I've probably listened to at least 20 times I'd guess.

I mostly listen on Spotify. Anything that I go out of my way to buy is likely to be a record that I really love, so it will definitely be revisited. There are some records from my teen years that I wouldn't touch now with a ten-foot pole, but they were mostly sifted out of my collection before I digitized everything.

As for how many Spotify albums I revisit, it's hard to estimate. My approach is different from most users on here (I think), in that I listen to a lot of albums once or twice without reaching a "click" or making a firm judgement. Then, when I'm in the mood for something of a particular type, I look through my preliminary rankings and find something that I think fits my mood. My initial listens give me enough of a familiarity with the album that I can easily indulge that mood.

The other advantage to this approach is that I can quickly survey a wide range of music. When I'm doing my chart studies, for example, I can usually get a good initial sense for a user's tastes at a glance.

It's interesting, I spend 99% of my music-listening time listening to new music. There are multiple times that I've gone through my iPod and said "Am I truly going to revisit this album?" and if the answer is no, I delete it (though I keep it as a part of my collection on my external hard drive).

However, if I'm putting music on with some friends or I'm listening to music as background noise (i.e. I'm working on something and like to have music on but I can't really pay attention to it) then I'll put on an album that I know. I can't tell you how many long college papers I knocked out to Bitches Brew and Giant Steps. But generally, I listen to music with this idea in my head that one day I'll come back to this album. I think I'm deceiving myself more than anything, telling myself that one day I'll relisten to this album because I loved it so much, but I don't often do it. Sometimes I do, but not very often.
