ORIGINAL POST

Alright so we're starting this! Much like the actual artist let's rank on the music forums, we'll be ranking directors by their works. One change though. Since these are films, we're going to take longer by installment. Typically about three to four weeks (though I'll throw in some smaller directors here and there for a quick week shot). Remember, you don't have to rank everything, just as much as you've seen.

Also, perhaps we can have BEA "Watchalong" days? Obviously we're all around the world so we couldn't all organise it at the same time but perhaps we can set a 24 hour window to watch a film together.

Anyway choices are:

Fear and Desire by Stanley Kubrick (1953)

Killer's Kiss by Stanley Kubrick (1955)

The Killing by Stanley Kubrick (1956)

Paths of Glory by Stanley Kubrick (1957)

Spartacus by Stanley Kubrick (1960)

Lolita by Stanley Kubrick (1962)

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to St...ick (1964)

2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick (1968)

A Clockwork Orange By Stanley Kubrick (1971)

Barry Lyndon by Stanley Kubrick (1975)

The Shining by Stanley Kubrick (1980)

Full Metal Jacket by Stanley Kubrick (1987)

Eyes Wide Shut by Stanley Kubrick (1999)

Full Metal Jacket
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
2001: A Space Odyssey

All of the above were great, so it's kind of silly that I haven't seen more.

I've only seen 2001. Greatest film ever? No. It lacks character development for the human Characters like Dave, and it occasionally takes a little too long to get to the point. However, these are visuals that, it terms of time and ability, top some of the SFX of today's standards. IMO, 2001's effects were better for the 60's than our SFX are for today. Plus, the story usually has some very compelling elements, notably that memorable ending. I don't think this movie needed to explain the ending. It's indeed great, but I can't say it's the greatest. One of the greatest films ever needs to be absolutely flawless. That's the feeling I got from Chinatown, which is the best film I've seen.

I'll probably watch Dr. Strangelove soon. Been wanting to see it for years. I forgot that was Kubrick.
