Last time I did this I was looking to get into Jazz, and now I'm looking to get into a genre I'm even less educated on. Literally the only soul album I have is "Call Me" by Al Green and I'm looking to change that. Any suggestions?
Sorry for bringing etymology into the conversation but I usually use soul to describe the music under the R&B umbrella from the 60s and 70s, and a lot of other people do as well. I'm still unsure of where to place R&B in the 80s like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. The late 80s saw the short existence of new jack swing, which was 80s R&B with hip-hop beats. And most R&B after that is generally considered contemporary R&B. Before soul, there were several movements such as doo-wop and R&B proper. Also, funk developed out of soul and had a similar timeline to it.
Unfortunately a lot these genres have advanced through singles more than through albums but I can name some soul albums that come to mind that are good for starters:
I think Sam Cooke has one of the most beautiful, pure voices in soul music, and this album is just him and a band doing some tunes. There's not attempt at making a big hit or anything, it's just simply Sam Cooke doing Sam Cooke and it's incredible.
My personal favorite Gaye album, better than (just barely) Let's Get It On and What's Goin' On, in my opinion (though those two are obviously necessities in soul music listening)
