I think the first time I'd heard of Steely Dan was in an AllMusic review of NIN's The Fragile that I read in 2008, comparing Trent Reznor's recording auteur to those two guys. Needless to say I was confused when I finally got around to listening to this a year later, as I found this to lack any of the "deep" seriousness stupid 15-year-old me saw in Trent Reznor's lyrics at the time.

Eventually, though, I slowly became less of an idiot, and while I still strongly prefer Pretzel Logic, this is alright. "Black Cow" is definitely a good banger to get you to dance with those cute baby boomers you meet at weddings.

Sickeningly slick, in sound and execution. This is the worst possible way one could interpret the term "jazz rock" as a concept. Deacon Blues is the sole highlight here, a fantastic track. The rest ranges from decent to nauseating, too clean and tame by far.

Do not mention The Dead in the same breathe as the rest of this drek. Honestly I don't get how they're even similar in tone or legacy or really anything other than relative age.

Anyway yeah this album is trash. The musical equivalent of a plastic Easter egg and not even one of the colorful ones. Like just plain white. Very plain and very white. And without any candy inside obviously. Just a bunch of fucking hot air

"Deacon Blues" is my favourite track, probably because while Donald Fagan often comes off as a smart arse, there is a touch of humility here.

While "Aja" is most often cited as their best, I think "Gaucho" is neck and neck with it.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

Damnnn all the Steely Dan hate. I like this album a lot, though I think Pretzel Logic (and maybe Can't Buy A Thrill) is better, it's still a really good album, the musicianship on it is killer
