Black Sabbath's reputation is secured by their first 3 albums , for me. I heard compilations before I heard this first album in full and the comps always erred on the negative, dreary side so that you quickly cloyed with it, but this album is more of a mixed bag than that and is infact a thoroughly entertaining rock album, a revelation if all you've heard were the comps before. BS at their inspired best.
Classic. My favorite Sabbath records are Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, but this is a beautiful nightmare of an album. Some very heavy moments (obviously) but also some very light moments. All of Black Sabbath's first six albums are good. Master of Reality is stacked on Side A so it isn't their best. But that doesn't keep it from being an essential listen for any rock or metal fan.
The best track is After Forever. What a great f***ing song. That guitar intro, the transitions, the instrumental segment, the lyrics (Would you like to see The Pope on the end of the rope? Do you think he's a fool?...I think it is true it was people like you who crucified Christ). After Forever has it all. Pure badass. It isn't only my favorite from Master of Reality; It's one of my Top 3 Black Sabbath songs in general. Never get tired of it:
It's just a killer record. It might not be the most consistent Black Sabbath album but the peaks I'd hold against any other Sabbath tracks, with the standouts being Sweet Leaf, Children of the Grave and Into The Void. Like most Black Sabbath it seems to get overlooked because of the huge influence it has had on metal & the numerous sub-genre out there and that seems daunting to some people, but really it's just a killer hard rock album. If you can dig Paranoid then there's no reason why Master of Reality shouldn't also make a positive impact on you.
