So, in 1970, a bunch of great acts were booked to take a train across Canada and play a series of live shows. These acts included Grateful Dead, The Band, Janis Joplin, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Buddy Guy, Delaney & Bonnie, and others. The tour was a disaster, and the train ride was a drug and alcohol orgy. The film, which disappeared and was forgotten for years, turned up in 1999 and was finally released in 2003.
It's a complete mess...and it's absolutely awesome.
Live songs are shown at the stops in Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary, as well as drunken jams on the train (Janis, Rick Danko and Jerry Garcia doing "Ain't No More Cain" on the train is perfectly classic). Some bands (Traffic, Ten Years After) never gave permission to be shown in the film...they are not seen at all, although performances were filmed. The footage of the musicians unsupervised on the train partying their asses off and having the time of their lives is simply great stuff.

I GOTTA see that. The songs from the train stops in Toronto and Winnipeg made it onto Janis Joplin's album Joplin in concert. And part of her stage patter between songs is talking about the train ride
