Surprised to see this as album of the day as I haven't seen this on any best album lists!
I think this is pure theatre posing as a rock album, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some people dismiss this album as it's not an authentic rock album in the way of the Stones or the Sex Pistols, but I think that is missing the point. Steinman uses some of the musical language of rock and borrowed some of the imagery apparent in rock music the time (e.g. hell, the demon on the cover) , but I don't think he really made a rock album. They are all love songs and this is more like a musical with its story telling and sweeping melodies. I think its the romanticism and escapism that appeals to so many people about this album. It's basically a lot of fun and Steinman is a skilled composer of dramatic melodies. Just don't expect to file next to the Velvet Underground.

Interesting that this sits at #444 on the BEA overall chart...and yet, with an average rating (434 times) of 69, if you sort by average rating, this album sits at about #8944... _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

I've hated this album my entire life. Jim Steinman is just one of the shittiest hacks ever. if I have to listen to a Jim Steinman album I'd rather listen to the album he did with Barbra Streisand. It's horrible, but not nearly as awful as this piece of shit.

I think this album is campy fun. I would much rather listen to this then say Slayer, the smiths, or The Sex Pistols. Is it great No but there are far worse things out there.

I love campy fun, but this just isnt it. Altho i I think you're right about Slayer. I might choose meatloaf over Slayer too.

This album has been one of my favourites since I started listening to music. I've never understood the hate for this album and top to bottom there isn't a single weak number. Meat's voice is operatic and powerful, the instrumentation featuring members of the E Street Band is great, especially Roy Bittan on piano is whose performances are catchy and fun, and Steinman's lyrics are campy, playful, and melodramatic whenever they need to be. It is absolutely not to be taken seriously, and for what it is, it is a sprawling epic, and one of the great underappreciated albums of classic rock.
Key tracks: Bat Out of Hell, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Paradise by the Dashboard Light _________________ Stay noided

I don't care what anyone says, this is a wicked good album.
I was indifferent at first, mostly based on my dislike for the biggest hit, 'Two Out of Three Ain't Bad,' which still turns my stomach to this day. But the rest of the album is positively fantastic. Over the top, bombast at it's finest. Jim makes no overtures to subtlety and just gives you an unapologetic full face blast of coming-of-age teen angst and it works perfectly.
I went through a phase when I thought it was fashionable to bash this album, but as I matured, I came back to it and came to realize the brilliance of what it is, and how perfectly it executes what it is with such unabashed purity.
There's actually a lot of Steinman's work I like better as I think his best songs are best delivered by female vocalists, but this album remains a high water mark in the annals of rock and roll excess.
