I grew up musically with Tom Petty. His songwriting was an inspiration to me in the highest degree. His drive to succeed as a musician was incredible. His fights against the injustices of the recording industry were legendary. His songs sounded basic and simple...and yet they were not. He loved what he did, and he gave that joy to everyone who ever enjoyed his music. He is a huge star...and he is as underrated as they come.
I was in a Petty tribute band for a few years in Colorado. We couldn't have done it without having some of the best players in Denver at our disposal, because to do his music the right way, that's what you have to have. It was a joy to play his songs, and to sing his words. To experience his entire catalog, and to be touched by his writing and his love of rock and roll.
My love of music, and of albums, owes a huge debt to Tom Petty. What a sad day in music.

I feel you, Roman. Yeah, I have grown up with his music always playing on the radio here in St. Louis (big rock town and he was as omnipresent as any artist on the radio as long as I can remember). One of the first albums which was given to me was that very well sold and popular compilation of his and I wore it out for a while. I moved away from his music, but I always had a soft spot for it and every time I would be in the car and hear a song of his I would for sure blast it. And at every family reunion they'd blast some tom petty in the hot summer sun and it was glorious.
I was not at all expecting this, and I also was not anticipating being so sad from the news. So, again, I feel you.
Yea, I think some of the news outlets jumped the gun a bit. Anyways, it appears he might die regardless. Hope for the best though, dude's probably one of my favorite musicians over the course of many decades and projects. one of the few musicians who could still make amazing music 20 years after his peak.

A natural pop songwriter in the truest sense, his ability to knock out a seemingly effortless three-minute wonder was almost unrivalled, and didn't desert him for a good two decades, from the mid-'70s to the mid-'90s (and possibly later, though I'm unfamiliar with his more recent stuff). I'm a relatively late convert, and I definitely get the sense that his music spoke more openly to Americans than it did Europeans, but it's no less devastating. _________________ 2021 in full effect.
