- Post subject: Best Year For Music- Round 1-Part 3: The 1980's
|
Happy New Year, BEA. After another 5 days of voting, the poll for the 1970's is over and it quite literally went down to the wire. The last couple days of voting were concluded by 1970 and 1977 gaining last minute votes to put them over the top. Thanks for making it a great thread, all years had at least 1 vote. The top 3 in order were 1971 (17 votes), 1970 (7), and 1977 (6) and will be moving on to a larger poll later on.
So now we move on to the 1980's. Once again, vote for the year you feel had the strongest output. The current BEA top 10 will be listed with its respective year. The 3 years with the most votes in the poll will move on. The poll will only last for 5 days before a poll for the 1990's is created.
A lot of great years and albums to ponder over, hope this creates some great discussion. Enjoy!

Pretty much a toss up between '80 and '81. In the end, I went with '80 overall even though my #1 all time album is from '81. After that, things wen't steadily down through at least '84. Some significant strength was regained in '87-'88, but not enough to save the decade relative to the '70s. Other than some good fusion, the decade was largely the bottom of the bathtub for jazz, which would recover some in the '90s.
My 1980 highlights:
Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath
Permanent Waves - Rush
Blizzard of Oz - Ozzy Osborne
Two Bs Please - Robbin Thompson Band
Progressions of Power - Triumph
A - Jethro Tull
Night Flight - Justin Hayward
Dregs of the Earth - Dixie Dregs
Chicago Fire - Son Seals
Splendido Hotel - Al DiMeola
The Things You See - Allan Holdsworth & Joe Beck
So Many Partings - Silly Wizard
Strikes Twice - Larry Carlton
Special Edition - Jack DeJohnette
Friday Night in San Francisco - Al DiMeola/John McLaughlin/Paco DeLucia
Cultosaurus Erectus - Blue Oyster Cult
Winelight - Grover Washington, Jr.
Tomcattin' - Blackfoot
Autumn - George Winston
Anytime Anyplace Anywhere - Rossington Collins Band
Frostbite - Albert Collins
Ready an' Willing - Whitesnake
Audio Visions - Kansas
Making Movies - Dire Straits
Ghost Riders - Outlaws
Emotional Rescue - Rolling Stones
Back on the Streets - Gary Moore
Back in Black - AC/DC
Bebe le Strange - Heart
Harder . . . Faster - April Wine
The Turn of a Friendly Card - Alan Parsons Project
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Barry Goudreau Barry Goudreau
Duke - Genesis
Animal Magnetism - Scorpions
Talas - Talas
British Steel - Judas Priest
Gaucho - Steely Dan

Great debut albums from Violent Femmes, Tears for Fears, Metallica, and R.E.M. Other highlights include Seven and the Ragged Tiger, Innocent Man, Genesis self-titled, and of course Sports by Huey Lewis. |
I'll also add War by U2 to that highlight list.

Recently realized I love a whole lot of albums from 1985. Actually it may be top heavy, but i'll look and post my top 10 of the year. But my vote is 1985. And as of now I put it behind only 69 and 77 overall.
1. Rum, Sodomy & The Lash by The Pogues
2. Hounds of Love by Kate Bush
3. Tim by The Replacements
(those 3 are next level perfect...top 10 all time for me... almost as great is...)
4. Rain Dogs by Tom Waits
(and then as expected it did fall off a bit, but still these are brilliant, also great year for Metal, crossover, and emo, post punk, industrial, and so much more... It is a great year.)
Paris, Texas by Ry Cooder
Seven Churches by Possessed
Rites of Spring by Rites of Spring
Hell Awaits by Slayer
Project Mersh by The Minutemen
Lorelei by The Cocteau Twins
Around The World In A Day by Prince
To Mega Therion by Celtic Frost
Thursday Afternoon by Brian Eno
This Nation's Saving Grace by The Fall
Bonded By Blood by Exodus
Between The Wars by Billy Bragg
Field of Glass by The Triffids
I included EPs from that year I love as well. But looking over it there is so much classic stuff I honmestly never got to or fell in love with. I mean, its not my thing, but Meat is Murder dropped that year, Psychocandy, The Head On The Door, New Day Rising, Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout, Songs From The Big Chair, etc. Lopts of cool stuff BEAers love.
Now, for the singles from 1985... my faves and then some that are noteworthy...
Raspberry Beret - Prince
Dirty Old Town - The Pogues
Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush
Just Like Honey - Jesus and the Mary Chain
How Soon Is Now - The Smiths
Cloudbusting - Kate Bush
Life's What You Make It - Talk Talk
Fade To Black - Metallica
Take Me With U - Prince
Barbarism Begins at Home.
Anyway, that is my vote. 1985 for the win!!! _________________ -Ryan

1980 by a mile. It was the only year that I was able to come up with a long list for a 1980s chart. Then as the 80s went on, the charts got shorter and shorter. Every kind of music got worse in the eighties. But mostly mainstream Rock, whereas that was the best music of the 60s and 70s. I hated all the major stars of the 80's. It would take about 10 years for things to pick up again. I grew up in the 80s, so I know what it was like. Heh heh.

What was the main factor that made you despise the major stars of the 80's anyway? To me this is a spicy opinion to have a discussion going.

I know. That's why I didn't name names. I don't want to get personal about it, because we all get very touchy about it.

Hit us with it Bobby. There's a difference between sharing an opinion and being a dick. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Exactly. There's always a way to offer an explanation about something without offending people. And that's what I did
I explained why I didn't much like it without giving the details.
