One of the best debut albums ever! "My Generation" and "The Kids Are Alright" are the classic songs they deserve to be. The rest of the songs aren't too shabby either!

Listened to this for the first time just a couple weeks ago. A bunch of good stuff on it but it's amazing to see how far their sound came from this record to more fully formed records like Who's Next and Quadrophenia. However, there were some pieces already in place. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

I never really was a fan of this kind of early-to-mid 60s "transitional" rock music. It's not full-on 50s rock and roll ; it's more refined, less spontaneous. Yet, it's not either on the level of complexity / realization of the records these bands would start to put out a few years later. By these bands, I mean The Beatles, The Stones or The Kinks (especially them, what an awful early output), and, in this case, The Who. I guess I just don't see how I could possibly prefer Beatles For Sale to Revolver ; Out Of Our Heads to Sticky Fingers ; The Kink Kontroversy to Something Else ; and, of course, My Generation to Who's Next. Not that there is anything wrong with any of these records, and I know it's slightly unfair to make such comparisons ; in fact, I do like My Generation. I just think these albums somehow lack both the energy of rock 'n' roll, and the inventiveness of what would come after, which they already hinted at. They're pleasant. Nothing more.
Of course I'm not talking about the singles. Twist & Shout, You Really Got Me, Satisfaction, My Generation, and countless other tracks really are among the best of the whole decade. The albums, though, certainly not.

I don't think it's one of the best rock albums ever made, as some publications reckon, but it's a pretty decent debut. The song My Generation is timeless and captured the zeitgeist of the 60's youth generation. I think this album is more important for who it influenced, namely hard rock, heavy metal, garage rock and punk rock bands. It has a wild rebellious spirit. But I don't think it's a classic album.

An insanely rockin’ debut unlike anything that came before. As of 1965, The Who were way ahead of the Beatles in terms of changing the sound and attitude of pop music.
