What Is And What Should Never Be is probably their second favorite of mine after Going to California.

I like Led Zeppelin best when they were writing 2nd rate Tolkien lyrics and being more dynamic with their songwriting (LZ III, Houses of the Holy) instead of being these sleazy creeps who played generic blues rock, fornicated girls with sharks and took credit for other artists work (even present on the albums I do like a lot), further cementing that they were spoilt white boys that didn't have any real problems (except for JPJ who is pure and we must protecc). This album falls into the latter camp; although it does have "What is and What Should Never Be" and "Ramble On" and there are some unintentionally hilarious moments (dat awkward "Moby Dick" drum solo aged so poorly it's funny) that makes it the superior '69 album (which was probably what those frisky bastards were doing after every gig).

Used to love this album. I still appreciate Zeppelin for what they are and what they meant to me growing up, especially with John Bonham being such an influence on the drums. But they might be the ultimate burn out band for me. Listened to them so much and almost can't stand hearing them anymore.

I wouldn't call this album literal dogshit but I do agree the production isn't fantastic by any means and seems a little undercooked in the performance department. I've always been baffled that they left Page's Heartbreaker solo take in there. Sounds drunk as all fuck.

At the end of the day though, this is an important record for a lot of people, myself included and there are some great songs here but I'm pretty okay with acknowledging the burn out that I have with Zeppelin. GVF probably has a lot to do with it.

I like Zep, their music for sure. But this is my least favourite of their first four albums.

For me it's: lll then lV then l then ll.

But it's not a bad album IMO, sure it has its faults but there are a lot of good moments.

Sometimes I prefer their live albums. But on How the West Was Won with the 19-minute Moby Dick, I skip that track, and I took it off my iPod. Its pretentious and self-indulgent.

I read recently that controversial veteran rock critic Dave Marsh hated Led Zep, particularly Bonham's drumming. He refused to put any of their songs in his famous list of 1,001 Greatest Singles. Although LZ didn't release many singles. Did they even release any in the UK? I know they did in the U.S.
