I was all set to vote for Mount Eerie. But first I felt I owed it another listen, as it had been almost a year since I last heard it, and I had last heard everything else recently. Turns out it doesn't have great replay value for me. The lyrics don't feel as poetic, and the instrumentals don't feel as poignant as they did before. I still like it, but it tumbled fifty-four spots on my 2017 chart with reassessment, and I will be casting my vote for The National. _________________ Join us in the canon game / Add me on RYM
It's unfair that this is a Sweet Sixteen matchup. Sleep Well Beast has much more listening value for me, but that's also a testament to the desolation Mount Eerie created on A Crow Looked At Me. Ultimately I have to go with The National's latest studio album, my #2 album of the year and highest remaining in the tournament, over an album that I also love but is further down my top 10 of 2017.
The National album has much more replay value whereas Mount Eerie had a bigger initial impact. Overall though Sleep Well Beast is placed higher in my chart so that's my pick here.
The National has a fantastic album here and I'll have to agree
Mount Eerie, for me, brought me back to exactly what it feels like to have a traumatic death occur to someone close to you. It's the most "real" music I think I've ever heard. And no, I don't want to put it on all the time. Funny thing is I didn't know what the album was about at first, and when I first put it on I thought, what is this lifeless garbage. Then I realized it was the numbing lifelessness I endured for years after losing someone close to me.
"I can't get the image out of my head of when I held you right there and watched you die."
A Crow Looked At Me is a very difficult album to assess. I went back to the 'review' I did at the time and still share the same sentiment. I've got a lot of issues with it - if I had to say if it was good or bad, I'd probably lean towards the bad. That said, it's unique, and it accomplishes something very few other albums do, so I'd suggest everyone hears it.
My vote goes to the National. 'Sleep Well Beast' is a very solid album. I think it's their most consistent, mature and subtle album to date. I think the beauty of it is how it doesn't seem to be trying to prove or say anything, it exists, and it's sure of itself for doing so.
I prefer 'Trouble Will Find Me', but this was a sure vote.
