Album of the year. The National (or better, the Dessners) managed perfectly to combine their typical sound with some innovations; great electronic sounds and synths come in to play along with the band's instruments, creating deep and fantastic atmospheres.
I had great expectations for this album, it probably has gone beyond them. Masterpiece.

Like others, I felt that Trouble Will Find Me showed signs of a band that could slip into complacency, but this is a return to greatness, and might one day bear comparison to Boxer. It is undoubtedly great, and yes, you can just put it on repeat.

I was worried about this album. I loved everything they've done since Alligator, but the 2015 release "Sunshine on my back" was exceptionally weak and began to sound like a band getting too comfortable with their sound. Thankfully, this album is nothing like that. It's fantasitic and fresh. Sure it has that National trademark sound, but it takes a liberal amount musical liberties as well. The result is a album that sounds fresh, fun, and most importantly, good.

Personally, this album is far from the likes of High Violet, Boxer or even Trouble Will Find Me. It does't have a Fake Empire, Bloodbuzz Ohio or I Need My Girl. Yet this album is very very enjoyable, if your expectations aren't too high. But again, I liked this collection of songs. A lot. The National keep captivating me with their moody, emotional yet interesting music.

This is undoubtedly a very very good album. After a couple of listens I know It's going to get many more rotations before I've wrung it dry of all the subtle (and not so subtle) elements within. And this is what makes a great album - being able to keep you returning to it time and again so as to improve upon the experience with each listen. SO far I've barely touched the surface of the lyrics and composition. Vying with Fleet Foxes for AoTY so far.

Is it better than Boxer? I don't know, but the fact that I'm having this discussion at all says what I need to say about the quality of this record.

A beautiful, apocalyptic masterpiece.

Still running, 5th time in a row. Maybe it's my longing, or maybe it's this good. Don't know

One of the best albums of the year and certainly of the decades. The National is a great band! I was looking forward to listening their new record and now that I am listening to it, it goes beyond my expectations. Definitely one of my favorite bands with Radiohead and Arcade Fire.

While I did enjoy Trouble Will Find Me, it was definitely one of their weaker albums. This however is freaking wonderful, sonically beautiful and still carrying thay emotional punch The National are so amazing at bringing. Of all their albums post-Alligator, Sleep Well Beast is definitely the most vicious,Turtleneck maybe being the band's most biting track to date. Undoubtedly my album of the year thus far.
