I'll never forget the first time I heard this album in the early 90's. I thought it was a work of genius and I still do.

My favourite grunge album, ahead of even Nirvana's 3 excellent 1991-1994 releases. My least favourite track here is "Silver", but even it is still pretty damn great. My favourites are "Debaser", "Tame", "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "No. 13 Baby", and "Gouge Away".

there is absolutely nothing "grunge" about Pixies outside of them influencing Nirvana and pretty every alternative rock band of the 90s

The Pixies are grunge? Never heard that before.
Anyway, I dig this album but don't understand the acclaim. It's good no doubt. But from 1989 alone, I'd say Stone Roses, Pretty Hate Machine, and Disintegration are way better.

The worst album in BEA's top five of 1989. Looking at the year as a whole, I place sixteen albums ahead of it and counting. That said, I do like the album and love some of the songs. _________________ Join us in the canon game :) / Add me on RYM

| Quote: | He told Norton, "If it's good enough for Buddy Holly ..."[15] In a Rolling Stone interview, Francis later recalled that "this record is him trying to make us, shall I say, commercial, and us trying to remain somewhat grungy".

It's ok, it's not grunge. It's grungy alternative rock.
Ok, now that we know what perfect box something fits in cause that's how the real world works... I really like this album, but I kind of agree with baystateoftheart... as fantastic as it is, I do find it a bit overrated. I mean not on a large scale... just as overrated as any other highly rated album. It has plenty of fantastic tracks. It's not incredibly cohesive. It has a shit track or two. But still is emotionally and musically really addictive and has some of the best song writing of its time and ever. As an album though, I find it far from perfect and ranked it my 269th favorite album.
90/100 for sure though.
