The practical application of one of those "what if you made the best single album out of a pre-existing double album" thought experiments... And the other half, most of which became the underrated Who Came First, is pretty good too.

The 3 singles are bloody brilliant but the filler tracks are meh. One of the most inconsistent albums of all time. It has 3 moments of brilliance (Baba, Blue Eyes, Fooled) and the rest I can take or leave. If the tracks had been consistently good it would be in my top 5.

This is the Who's best album. There are no filler tracks. There are no inconsistencies. This is a 10/10 record.

The Who's best
1971's best.

One of the greatest ever regardless of categorization.

Two people who have attacked me over the past month, has this album in both their top 10s. Good album, bad reputation. Plus Tommy is leagues better imo.

Going to have to agree that it's more inconsistent than the constant praise would suggest. The high points are insanely high though.

I actually have to agree with this.

I really want to like The Who, I do, but just like I really want to like Queen, they both have really inconsistent records. I'll be appreciating their best of compilations and saving my time with their albums.

And yes, I've listened to a good chunk of them:

Album Artist Year Year Rank Rating
Quadrophenia The Who 1973 10 79.4
My Generation The Who 1965 5 75
Who's Next The Who 1971 22 70.5
Live At Leeds The Who 1970 31 70
The Who Sell Out The Who 1967 26 65
Tommy The Who 1969 48 65

Queen comes in a bit ahead, but not stellar either:
News Of The World Queen 1977 3 82.2
A Night At The Opera Queen 1975 9 80
Queen II Queen 1974 6 75.9
A Day At The Races Queen 1976 6 75.5
Innuendo Queen 1991 19 70
Sheer Heart Attack Queen 1974 10 66.9
