As the '70s wore on, more and more people from the heavy rock scene crossed borders to join the pro-democracy forces based in Zambia and Mozambique. These young soldiers often adopted noms de guerre to protect their families from retaliation should they be captured or their units were infiltrated by Rhodesian informers. Many took the names of rock and rollers from abroad, calling themselves Jimi Hendrix or Mick Jagger. To keep up spirits, the guerrillas sang the songs that local rock bands were writing to encourage the liberation fighters. The most popular was “Watch Out,” which became the anthem for a generation at war.
Watch Out is really good, if admittedly a bit of a strange choice for a latter '10s tournament, but interested in checking out more of the whole scene as well. Flesh Without Blood has indeed been overplayed and it's sad how these days Grimes has been reduced to a tabloid staple, but this song is still something really special, capturing both the sugar rush and the rotting tooth at the same time. Not my favorite off Art Angels but still a pretty great rep of 2015 (man, that truly is a moment lost in time ain't it? The year and Art Angels itself). I'm boring and it gets my vote.
And please tell me the baby wasn't actually named X-y-aE 12 or whatever the fuck it was first reported to be
I prefer the Wells Fargo track but cannot, in good faith, vote for a song recorded in 1976. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
Maybe it was a bit lame to nominate an old song for a 2010's tournament, even if it was a lost record of sorts. I didn't really think about it honestly. With that said I'm a sucker for oddities like Wells Fargo and find the history behind the song/band/cultural movement fascinating. It's been a favorite of mine since I got my physical copy from Vinyl Me Please in 2016. My only goal with this nomination was to spread the word about some interesting lost music from Zimbabwe's past, so as long as that's achieved and a few people check out the full album, I'm happy. The Grimes song is great too. _________________ Griselda, by Fashion Rebels 2020's Hip-Hop 2020's Country
I would have nominated Flesh Without Blood if it wasn't already nominated and it easily gets my vote. I agree that Art Angels is one of the best pop albums of the decade and though it's full of fantastic tracks I think this is the best one.
The Wells Fargo track is pretty good too, cool to hear it after all these years even if the story behind it is a bit better than the music. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.
