Huh, this is one of a few Nick Cave albums I haven't heard, guess it's time to check it out.

Do it EKF, it's an incredible record. My 2nd favorite after Skeleton Tree.

I want Spectrum Pulse to Classic review it.

Given the fact that I'm not the biggest fan of their early post-punkish albums, I consider this to be their first truly great album. It is their first ballads-heavy piano driven record, with prominent gospel influences and beautiful arrangements.
The Ship Song is possibly the best song Nick Cave ever wrote and one the most beautiful love songs ever.

Nick Cave is the artist I've most recently fallen in love with. The latest artist I've taken the deep dive with and have largely stayed in their pool. I concur with some of the sentiments in this thread so far that The Good Son is, largely, a change of course and it's also a very good indication of what Nick would continue to perfect and what his band would continue to brilliantly execute around him. The Weeping Song is a bruiser that'll stay in your head for quite a while after you're done listening to it.

Through my first listen of Nick's catalog, it's closer to the middle of the pack for me, but in a marvelous and varied discography like this one, that's not an indication of this record being mediocre whatsoever. I consider it a pretty great change of pace and an important Bad Seeds record .

Hard agree. This album is probably somewhere between top and middle tier Cave for me, but definitely has it's moments. I can say, however, even though his discography is incredibly consistent and it's hard to pick best eras, I definitely find myself loving the latest 2013-2021 phase the most.
