R.E.M. honestly. Lots of solid records in their early run like Murmur but they never really hit the consistency on any of their records that make me go ohhhhhhh this is the classic.
Edit: Maybe Isis too? I've never really been wowed. They're a little turgid to me in their realm.

Completely agree on R.E.M. lots of good albums but nothing that stands out to me as "great". Agreed on Black Keys too.
The Police also come to mind for me. All of their albums are elevated by their great singles, but not one of the albums really stands out to me as a great piece. Although by that same logic, there's tons of artists from the pre-album era that fit the bill: Elvis, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, and Al Green come to mind as potential examples. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

I can see Elvis and Chuck Berry, although I haven't listened to enough of their LPs. Al Green is not from the pre-album era, and I consider all five of his LPs that I've heard great. _________________ Join us in the canon game :) / Add me on RYM
