Such an odd album. It feels very all over the place, and yet still maintains some level of greatness.
I feel like the opener with the KRS track is the first for an alternative group to get together with a hip-hop artist, and not the last for REM (Q-Tip joined them later).
Losing My Religion of course is what it is. I feel like the irony on Shiny Happy People is lost on most.
But these tracks pack such a punch for me. It's such a dark side of REM idk if ever really revisited.

Almost right. However, fairly sure this was earlier:

Also, why do people get so bugged about there being pop song in their discography? REM attempted this kind of song several times before with Superman, Exhuming McCarthy and Stand. Great album.
This was the first REM album I heard and owned (on cassette).
I'd heard Stand, the single on a school holiday in Belgium the previous year and my interest was piqued.
Losing My Religion was and remains for me a pivotal, fantastic song.
But there are loads of great songs on here esp. Belong and Country Feedback and Radio Song.
For me they eclipsed this with Automatic but OOT remains an important album for me
And albums you hear when you are 16 are always gonna resonate with you.
I also have memories of a family holiday driving through France, through the Pyrenees to get to Spain. It was breathtaking, and this album was on my walkman.
It always reminds me of summer. And the 90s.
By far their weakest album in my opinion. Losing My Religion was the only song that really stood out for me. They made up for the poor song writing on Automatic for the People; their last great album.

They wrote A LOT of great pop tunes and I love them for it.
I was speaking towards this aspect of the irony of the song and even if I didn't know this, you can feel it drip in irony:
Quote:
Stipe says he adapted the phrase "Shiny Happy People Holding Hands" from a Chinese propaganda poster issued just after the Tiananmen Square massacre.
Somehow these numbers make a lot of sense and then don't - spotify play counts:
1) Losing My Religion with 681,143,523 (more than double the next track)
2) Everybody Hurts with 242,759,969
3) Shiny Happy People with 163,143,120
4) End of the world 132,932,756
5) Man on the Moon 98,384,661
It just feels so 90s and limited to who they were.
Also damn... this track still hits me like a ton of bricks:

Yep, very true.
I feel like sometimes the band themselves didnt get behind this album all that much (from interviews and setlists). Its always been classic REM to me though.
