I think Can’t Knock the Hustle is an absolutely perfect hip hop track. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Jay’s flows on this are unbelievable - that swaggering arrogance really helped propel him to megastardom later, but he was never again this nimble or melodic. The smooth, densely-packed beats, particularly those from Ski, really lend an authentic air of luxury to proceedings, and allow Jay’s mob mogul tales to feel lived-in. It also helps that he might be the most natural rapper New York ever produced, with only his mentor Big - and, at a push, Method Man - for competition. Straight out the gate, he displayed sheer mastery of the form. Also prevalent here (though arguably more so on later albums) is his killer knack for a catchy hook. Also, whilst it’s reductive to compare the two, this is just so much more varied than Illmatic, much closer in many senses to stuff OutKast we’re doing at the time, in terms of its musicality, its unpredictable cadences, its pop nous. An absolute masterpiece, and still his best despite a remarkably stacked, if often underappreciated, discography. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
