Jesus Lord will get my vote because it was on my shirt list for what I was going to nominate. It’s one of the few songs the last few years that makes me weep from how gorgeous and powerful and real it is. The first 6.5 minutes before the spoken word are just minimal perfection. One of my fave Ye Tracks post-Yeezus.
Waitin On Ya is fabulous as well and that whole Genesis Owusu debut album is a fucking statement. He is a creative dynamo. And this track kicks ass. So funky and sexy and it’s just awesome.
Again, brutal to make me vote against Owusu. But that is what I did. Jesus Lord is great. Also the spoken word voicemail message at the end is pretty cool but after about 5 times listening to this track, I started skipping that part.
Edit: oh and now that I methodically listened to all 16 of this first batch of matches, there are some beasts that I love already.
Number 1 is gonna be my nomination, Ulcerate’s “Stare Into Death and Be Still”. But, ignoring that, the ones I can see potentially getting me to vote against one of my moms in the future (in order) are:
1. Jesus Lord by Ye
2. Like I Used To by Sharon Van Etten + Angel Olsen
3. Sins of the Father by Ka
4. Enlacing by clipping.
5 I Know the End by Phoebe Bridgers.

It pains me to vote against Genesis Owusu but with this particular track from Donda against this particular track from Smiling With No Teeth I gotta go with Ye this time. Both great and the hardest match up for me to decide so far.
