  • Post subject: The best "cool" album?
Just been listening to this and I was thinking how to describe it to someone, it's a brilliant album and I know plenty will be aware of it but it's not really mainstream - maybe it's "cool"? That got me thinking what other "under the radar" albums there might be out there for us to recommend each other?

I certainly wouldn't say it isn't cool, because it is, but there's standard genre-label lingo for this sort of situation. Spacemen 3 are a "lo-fi shoegaze-psychedelic band." Sometimes the word 'garage" is used in place of "lo-fi"... There are also elements of drone, space-rock, ambient, and even folk-rock throughout this album, and indeed most all of their discography, but if you only have one sentence to work with, you should probably just go with the accepted labels, as cynical as that may seem.

Personally, I also like to use the term "anti-emo," because I'm not into emo stuff... but generally speaking, in addition to the Velvets themselves they get compared to other VU-influenced 80s-90s stuff that people might have heard of, like Spiritualized, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Felt, and maybe Sonic Youth, just to name a few. For more obscure comparisons, I might also mention Nap Eyes or even Cass McCombs.

To me, the best cool album hasn't been released yet, but it is on the way. Who is releasing it? Mason Ramsey. Smile Smile Smile

God bless you and him always!!!

P.S. Go here for a short clip of one song that I hope is included on the new release. To me, it couldn't sound anymore butt kicking awesome. Smile Smile Smile

It's the same thing, really — as soon as someone releases the best cool album, it's replaced as the best cool album by an album that hasn't been released yet. That's why we all keep listening to new albums.

That's a good question. I don't really understand either.

Its very much dependent on the moment and the people you are with but I've always thought of Colossal Youth by Young Marble Giants as a cool album.
