Oh man, I like Mary Halvorson and Full of Neon is a treat. Patricia Brennan's vibraphone always steals the show. Love how it's so reticent, but guides the melodies and sets the tone in all the right ways. I'm not kidding anyone, still voting Geese, but Halvorson always deserves a shoutout. _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
Geese has been getting a LOT of shade thrown at them over the past couple of days because of this story in Wired suggesting that "the fanfare around (them) actually was a psyop," and that they were an "industry plant." This has prompted a defense (of the marketing techniques used to promote their last album) in Consequence of Sound, the first of what I suspect will be many such pieces.
I'm not really a big fan of Geese, though I like them a whole lot better than I ever liked Neutral Milk Hotel, who really were an industry plant/psyop (in my opinion). I guess I tend to agree with the Consequence of Sound guy โย they figured out a way to take advantage of an inherent weakness of the algorithmic new-media hellscape we're currently obliged to navigate to find decent new music, so if that's what music-marketing is now, then more power to 'em, I guess.
And now TMZ is reporting that Geese lead singer Cameron Winter was seen on a date with Olivia Rodrigo. So he seems to have pretty good taste in women, at least! Way to go, dude! ๐
I'd reveal who I voted for in this pairing, but I've already forgotten. (Sorry!)
The response to that article has me wondering how many people even think at all. Like ok, here's this company that a lot of bands have worked with, and this means that this one band is supposedly fake. People just taking whatever information available so that they can conclude the people who disagree with them are just manipulable npcs and making me think that yeah, maybe they actually are.
The "Industry Plant" argument always feels bizarre to me, but then again my formative years weren't spent on social media. It's this bizarre meritocracy fantasy that everybody who becomes famous now has to do so with zero help and only fueled on their own blood, sweat and tears, and not realizing how many of their supposed home-grown authentic social media stars did get some sort of external help to help grown their brand. In the music industry I remember the pre-online days when relentless promotion was much more taxing and completely necessary, so yes even the bands with the smaller labels needed that extra help. Again I feel like it is a generational thing, but sorryIguess for seeming condescending to the overzealous zoomers or gen Alpha? or judging by this article my elder millenial brethren as well who constantly use this argument are often either just optimistically naive or just looking to lower that Poppy (and telling with the experience of a cynical armchair critic, a tinge of jealousy as well). Again I donn't really care too much who helped water it if the plant's freaking awesome.
Also of course that article just comes across as complete muckraking clickbait, but again I guess that's pretty much what we call journalism these days.
Anyhooz, this is actually a close one, really like Holvorson as well as the Geese track... which of course may suffer a bit because it's a bit below "Husbands" as well as other non-nominated songs off the album, but still really freakin' tasty.
Didn't expect Mary Halvorson to be leading in this match-up - though Geese suffering from voters' fatigue is a valid argument. Either way, really happy BEA has been vibing with Full Of Neon. _________________ Bob Dylan Charles Mingus
