Came out before Nevermind, yet Nirvana gets all the credit for heavily influencing grunge.

One of my least favourite albums of all-time. Pure, undiluted stodge.

"ten" barely registered for a week at the bottom of the billboard 200 albums before "nevermind" came along and resurrected pearl jam's album from obscurity. _________________ fav artists NOW | ALL-TIME favs | i listen 2 more music than u so u don't have 2!

I think it's great. I'll even take it over Nevermind, and I actually like Nevermind.

I don't like it myself.
I mean, it's not the guy's voice because I fucking love that, but the music itself.

Personally I prefer Nevermind over this, but still it's really great, very close to a masterpiece IMHO (what sets it back are a couple of dull songs). Vedder's vocals fit perfectly with the material (great songwriting btw), giving the impression of a man with a complicated, troubled past: Sometimes he sounds like a realized person, ready to make up with himself and his persons, while at other parts he still sounds frustrated and disappointed with his mistakes or he just takes a look back at situations he could not overcome with melancholy. Besides that it interchanges perfectly between mellow and raw, while it maintains throughout a solid sound which could be independent from the grunge movement. My favorite track is definitely Alive, but Release, Jeremy, Even Flow, Once and Oceans are truly great songs as well.

Nearly flawless from cover to cover. "Once" is an incredibly powerful opener. "Black" and "Jeremy" give me goosebumps every time, and the much underappreciated "Oceans" and "Release" are unbelievably gorgeous. "Even Flow" and "Alive" are two other great tracks, though not quite as powerful as the other two major singles, and "Garden" and "Deep" are loaded with great guitar and drum licks. "Porch" has some great vocal melodies, as well. If there's one weak track, it's "Why Go". That would be the one that doesn't have a lot going for it.

I don't particularly enjoy grunge, but this is OK.
