There’s a thin line between an album being completely ridiculous, and ridiculously great. I’m a huge fan of anyone who’s able to push over the line and create something so audacious, so unlike what anyone else is making, that you can’t help but respect their ignorance to everything else that’s going on. So what are some albums that you recognize may be extremely cheesy, or just plain bad by conventional standards, but you love because the artists dedication and adherence to their vision.

Rick Wakeman- Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Alexander Skip Spence – Oar
The Residents- God In Three Persons, If you’ve never heard this go, now, and get it, NOW…
The Shaggs- Philosophy of the World, Obvious choice, but it really is charming
Butthole Surfers- Hairway To Steven
Guns N’ Roses- Chinese Democracy- The hubris that it took to make this beyond me. Songs like Street of Dreams are so completely corny that you can’t help but love them for their otherwordly, almost robotic sheen.
Bobb Trimble – Harvest of Dreams
Bonzo Dog Band- The Doughnut in Granny’s Greenhouse
Queen- A Night At The Opera- May be the best example of something that’s great because of how ridiculous it is. Random note, the song 39’ is incredible, maybe my fav on the album.
The Byrds- Sweetheart of the Rodeo (fantastic country album that apparently just wasn’t what people wanted from the Byrds)
Motley Crue's Too Fast For Love. It's like, yeah, it's fucking horrible, but it's so relentlessly in-your-face, grimy and classless that it's actually a pretty fun listen.
It sucks...but it's amazing as hell. (As long as you don't have GREAT EXPECTATIONS) get it? 😁 _________________ And I stare at the sun.
And it leaves me Blind.
Good picks everyone. I also had a soft spot for that Bloodhound Gang record when it was released, just abysmal, but fantastic. Good choice with Tom Waits, he has definitely carved out his own niche and makes no attempt to soften his sound to appeal to a wider audience.

Joanna I had never even heard of Jobriath, thanks for the intro. His story is pretty fascinating and the little bit of the music I've now heard is surprisingly solid.
I'm gonna pick on a sacred cow for some people: Trout Mask Replica--Captain Beefheart is definitely in this category. I still can't decide if it's brilliant or just pretentious, and arguments could be made either way. Also, a lot of Frank Zappa belongs in this category and a lot of Guided by Voices stuff for its wacky imaginative/nonsensical titles and lo fi lack of professionalism. Early Sebadoh is pretty ridiculous. Beat Happening with Calvin Johnson's ridiculously low voice comes to mind.
Oh, a lot of solo Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers stuff and comes to mind (I'm a Little Airplane, Ice Cream Man, Here Come the Martian Martians), although I personally dig his quirkiness.
