Fascinating vs. great fun. I rated both the same, they're both very good. But, I don't know why, I want to go with fun right now. I'll vote Santogold.

Where did the concept of a "rock guitar duo" come from?
"This question makes no sense. We do like guitars because they can sound not like guitars." (Interview with Piero Scaruffi)

While Tim Hecker hates cubs, SotL wrote this:

"Technically, this is music for a single instrument. Whatever the sources are, they are fused in one multi-faceted sound (a sort of cosmic wave) that acts as the only instrument (with an otherwordly effect).
There is a majesty and a grandeur to these pieces that recalls Messiaen's sacred music for organ.
This is a culmination of sort, as the duo veers from its psychedelic/ambient/noise (basically, rock) beginnings towards a more classical form and more classical structures."
Piero Scaruffi

"Most of the time, music expresses feelings or emotions we can't express with words. Music is affective, it's more than just an opinion you have. Opting out of words is a part of that strategy. Making music is a process of giving back. Trying to pay homage to the beauty of sound that surrounds us." Stars of the Lid

Link

"The listener is meant to focus attention on the subtle build and decay inside these layered drones. Slight breaks in harmony between a violin and a shard of guitar feedback carry serious emotional weight. The half-second decay of a breathless French horn resonates like a perfect chord change. Silence becomes another instrument." Mark Richard-San, Pitchfork

Link

"There is a progression in all the music here, but it is so subtle, so quiet and un-intrusive, the listener would have to pay very careful attention to everything that is happening. More realistic, however, is for those who take pleasure in SOTL's music and inner space explorations -- for this truly is a music of the inner terrain -- to offer themselves little distraction other than a comfortable chair or resting place in order to let this music enter at will, naturally and expand until it takes you over the edge into something resembling sleep, but far more delicious." Thom Jurek, Allmusic

Although I should say that Santogold is one of my top 5 discoveries from this tournament but it should've been a fucking life-changer or sth to convince me to vote against SotL.

Santogold isn't usually the kind of music I listen to but SOTL bores me to tears.

I'd say there is both emotional and atmospheric depth to Stars of the Lid.

Santogold doesn't feel much more than formulaic pop that I've heard countless times in my life, with and without my wanting to do so.
