OK, this may come under personal taste and stuff like that and I'm presume you know about all of that stuff. But I find it kind of funny - and I'm guilty of this too - that when somebody hates an artist/band and probably never going to give them a chance, when that person likes/admires or is a fan of another artist/band who has cited them as an influence or critics have been able to label their album or their sound in general to have clear characteristics that the other artist/band that the person respectively hates.
Another discussion type thread. Feel free to type what you think if interested. And if any, share any examples.

I am trying to think where I currently or used to fall within this ideology. I mean there is understanding where the influences came from, acknowledging their importance, and personally enjoying them. At this point I'd like to think I can enjoy, acknowledge, and understand; but I know there has been cases when I was younger where it was different and exactly what you are talking about.

Well, sometimes slight differences make all the..er..difference. Like me, I love Metallica while I have serious issues with almost every other thrash band, including Megadeth. While I could elaborate on that particular phenomenon, other examples are not so easy to explain, and I guess most users here have their hang-ups, lol.

I may even give a Lady Gaga album a chance, but it's unlikely that I'll ever like it.

On the topic of Lady Gaga. She's got some pretty good singles. Her albums are pretty irksome.
EDIT: I would just like to say that the topic kind of applies to me. For ex. I'm in love with Zombies' album Odyssey and Oracle as well as Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds, though it doesn't spread that greatly to Beatles albums that have been said to sound similar, even though I enjoy the Beatles output Sgt. Peppers onward, I haven't enjoyed it to the extent I have of those two albums mentioned.

Yeah, her albums are pretty uneven at the very least. She has a long way to go to match the consistency of Madonna.

I don't judge music by analyzing its qualities and how they correspond to other things I've decided I like. It ain't about lumps on a chart; it's about the bumps in your heart.
@IrishMusicHead, the similarities you're talking about between bands are probably not the qualities that the person in question cares about.

Agreed, two bands can be largely similar in terms of sound, subject matter, genre, etc. but one little thing such as vocalist differences can easily make one likeable to me and the other meh.
