  • Post subject: Why Does Sixties Music Bore Me So Much???
Hey, guys! Recently, I've had a problem: Every non-Beatles sixties album I listen to is okay at best, and Astral Weeks at worst Razz

To show what I mean, I'm gonna name every non-Beatles sixties album I've listened to so far:

*Pink Floyd-The Piper at the Gates of Dawn: Probably the best that I've seen from a sixties album so far. It all goes downhill from here.
*Pink Floyd-More/Saucerful of Secrets: These albums have a few hits, but are far from being perfect.
*Rolling Stones-Let It Bleed: Has it's moments, but it's country-style songs are annoying as heck.
*Bob Dylan-(Insert Album Here): The most overrated man in the history of music. He can't even sing, and his riffs are just plain generic.
*Beach Boys-Pet Sounds: Even at 37 minutes, it gets old fast.
*The Doors-The Doors-Now, I have to say, this was a pretty great album, even though I found "The End" to be incredibly offensive.
*Jefferson Airplane-Surrealistic Pillow: ...No. Just no.
*Jimi Hendrix-(Insert Album Here): These were good, but had too much distortion, and, when I think about it, way too much filler.
*Deep Purple-Shades of Deep Purple: This was good generic prog rock, but nothing special.
*King Crimson-In the Court of the Crimson King: Way too pretentious.
*Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin/Led Zeppelin II: These are decent, but also are a bit "meh" for me.
*The Velvet Underground and Nico: Dumb, dumb, dumb.
*Van Morrison-Astral Weeks: Possibly the worst album I have ever listened to. Absolute trash.

Nope, I don't think any of those deserve to get into my top 50, but at the same time, I feel bad that I don't have any sixties albums on there. Is there anything else I should listen to before I go out on a limb and say "the sixties sucked"? Other than the Beatles, I already know that they're awesome.

Thanks, guys![/b]

I have the opposite problem .. I thought the beatles made it generic and boring .. I see the doors as a close second behind the beatles .. and I actually like Surrealistic Pillow Smile

The one thing that The Beatles did do however (especially with revolver) was they started making whole albums (not just two or three decent songs and the rest filler, but you're more than likely aware of this.)

I don't think there's anything more to it than that .. I'll have to agree with you and say that the 60's aren't really that great, Its just a gateway to nostalgia, for that generation to go back and listen to the songs that represented significant changes at that point in their lives. As far as I know, its the trip down memory lane rather than the music itself, But that's just what I've picked up, Im sure many will disagree with me

I love the sixties my third favourite decade, 70's in first, then the 00's and then the 60's, I am getting into the 90's more now, but I don't really like anything from the 80's, 80's are horrible!

I know you like Female vocalists, so check out Joni Mitchell, and Laura Nyro two of the best female vocaliste I have ever heard..
Try Bufallo Springfield and their album Retrospective, its a collection of songs, but its very good..
Velvet Underground - White light/White heat, you may not like this, but it cannot be described as boring!
Listen to The Kinks, a few of their albums I think you'd like, "Somthing Else by The Kinks" and "Well Respected Kinks" very upbeat garage like rock..
And if you like soul try Otis Redding and Sam Cooke can't get much better in soul than them two..
If you like Neil Young listen to "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"...
And have you listened to Simon and Garfunkel? Try "Bookends" and the "Sound of Silence"..
Some southern rock like Creedence Clearwater Revival, their best in the 60's in "Green River"
Another great artist, Frank Zappa, check him in Frank Zappa and Mothers of Invention, lots of styles in here like rock, jazz-fusion, etc..
Also I nearly forget Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin..

Check out these and come back to me Smile

Not everybody can be saved. You have tossed away some fine 1960s albums already. Try these:
    A Love Supreme-John Coltrane
    Forever Changes-Love
    Beggars Banquet-The Rolling Stones
The Village Green Preservation Society-The Kinks

Don't forget The Beatles can be on your chart too.

Lawl, I have three on mah chart (would even add more, but I want to make room for other artists), so I don't have a problem with that Razz

@Rainey: I've listened to Blue by Joni Mitchell, and even though it was technically from the seventies, it was pretty boring. Had the same problems as Bob Dylan's stuff. And I don't know if I wanna give Lou Reed another chance (I have a personal bias against him). But thanks anyway Smile

I wonder if production quality and recording quality have anything to do with it? You grew up in a time when analog recording pretty much didn't exist. That's too bad because analog sounds much better than digital imo. Also, in the 60's, recording consoles were limited to two, four and eight tracks (by the end of the decade). This meant it wasn't possible to have all the instruments insanely loud and in your face like a lot of modern recordings.

That could be it, but most of the artists and albums you say you don't like require a more sophisticated ear and open mind to appreciate. It comes down to age and experience really. Speaking from my own experience, most of the 60's artists and albums you say you don't like are artists and albums I didn't get into until post-high school. I would say I was 19 or 20 when I started listening heavily to most of those. An album like Astral Weeks is sort of Earth shattering as it breaks a lot of the rules of popular music. Same can be said for The Velvet Underground and Pet Sounds. My point: These albums are outside your realm of experience as a teenager, and you've spent a lot of time crafting a musical schema of sorts, and you don't necessarily want to hear something that's going to challenge what you already know or believe to be good, so your instinct is initially to dismiss what is strange or different from what you like. I don't mean this as a put down. It's normal. Right now, it's likely you want a catchy tune that rocks and music that speaks to what it is to be a teenager. That's normal. In a few years, you'll probably want something different.

Very well said Mr Shankly. I totally agree.
Like food, it's all about acquired tastes. I used to hate coffee, yet I'm an addict now :S
I couldn't have listened to most albums on my chart 10 years ago, I just wasn't ready for the noise, the experimental...

Take your time !

Well, I agree with the quailty arguement Shankly, as maybe some people just prefer digital over the analog
I also would agree with the aquiring a taste for the music, but age doesn't really come into it, I think its what you are brought up with and what genre's you like..
I was brought up with "that" sort of music as a child and I am only 17, and I love all of the albums mentioned there except the Zeppelin albums (just don't care for hard rock/metal that much) whereas Applerill has stated alot that he was brought up on Disney Radio, so thats why I say he doesn't like them..
@Applerill, its all about increasing you palate for music so keep listening, and if at first you don't like, go back try a couple of more times, and if you still don't like it, go to other artists in that genre in the 70's, 80's and work your way back to the creators of that genre, and maybe your taste and thoughts on music has changed by then..

All those albums are so good! Maybe you're being too judgmental, just take it as it comes. Dig it for what it is, not for what it's not.

Yeah man I remember when I thought beer was really gross and designed for mustached old fogies. And shit, what do you know, now its like my favorite thing on Earth. You should at least give "Let it Bleed" another shot. I at least award you with the balls to call such monolithic albums "dumb dumb dumb" in front of a bunch of pretentious album freaks. Either that or Applerill is really Elston or someone else playing jokes on everyone.
