The first three White Stripes albums were glorious. Jack squawks and riffs while Meg thumps like an off-kilter metronome. The polish they accumulated on their later albums just dulled their mojo.

Their debut was good and obviously showed great potential, but this is where they started to really hit their stride. Jack's usual cheekiness was well established here, and the blues roots are as unabashed as ever. They hadn't completely found their sound at this point, but it was clear they were well on their way, and it's fantastic to listen to them finding it.
