I have thought about why I can pick up something I have never heard before and love it and why other things take time, and why there are just some albums I will never be able to truly appreciate.

I think it has to do with your own measurements of aesthetics, your nurture/nature as argued earlier as well as by Kant (philosophy), and then also it kinda has something to do with your connection with that music.

Britney Spears is a perfect example. I hated her when she first came out, but now that I am older and that was part of my past (whether I like it or not), I have some kind of appreciation for it.

So- if an artist/album is against your aesthetics, nurture/nature, and you have no connection with it otherwise, most likely you won't be able to enjoy it as much.

The biggest thing for me when listening to an album is how it effects me. If it gives me goosebumps at various points, if it totally changes my mood. Simply put, how enjoyable is it to listen to and how does it make me feel.

This right here. I base my favorites on how much they effect me.

I'm implying that modern pop music is made to be enjoyable for a while, and then forgotten as a new track comes along.

Well. I don't really agree with that. But to each his own I guess.
