Is there any double album quite like 'The River' by Bruce Springsteen? You know, where all the songs are amazing, catchy and heartfelt for the first half and the second half is completely weak, unsteady and can't grab a haystack from a cloud? Is there another double album that you could condense to a exceptional single album by simply saying "Right, get rid disc 2/vinyls 3 and 4"? Is it alone in it's field?
Maybe there is some brilliance hidden in it some where? Maybe it has something to do with the song 'The River'? It comes right at the end of the first half and the message isn't half bleak. It's like he got married and all the youth, dreams, candy canes and hope have vanished into the air. He's now broken and he's all like "I don't remember and I don't care" and the best way to show this would be recording an under par album to go with the good one, completely driving the despair home.
Artists usually have a gap of 10 years before doing this. Bruce does it in a single one... all the while making you weep into your weetabix!
