The fact is that a lot of people are biased against people significantly more privileged than themselves. I know I can be (although in the case of Vampire Weekend it doesn't matter to me). I often don't like people because I perceive them to be overly privileged. I'm human.
Of course in real life it's different, you can't ignore someone's background when talking to him / her. But when listening to music, I think you can make total abstraction of it. I can't forget Bono's twattery when listening to U2, but I don't give a single shit about whether he was born in good or modest conditions.
