In terms of getting data and opinions on music it's allmusic.com and pitchfork.com and theneedledrop on YouTube mostly.

Rateyourmusic for the reviews (I learned it is best to avoid the forums) and a few users of Listology, primarily. Bunch of other sites if I am just looking for a few random lists. Oh, and Last.fm

Pitchfork is pretty good

It's fun just to type in a band you like and then picking one of the ones the map comes up with that you don't know and listen to that. Have found some interesting stuff on there.
