There was a thread a while back named 'Will anything in the future compare to the best ever?' Basically a discussion started whether any of todays albums will be regarded as classics along side the ones of the past. The majority were sure they would. Then the thread ended.

In this one I'll make predictions of future classics of the 00s (won't go into the 10's today) on the basis that some of those classics are not in the top 100 right now and others which are in the top 100 now will be virtually forgotten in 30-40 years and will stand no chance of getting top 100 position if they started this site then.

These choices do not represent my preferences in music and I could be wrong with a lot of things. However I would like to stick my neck out for your personal enjoyment so here goes:

Tier A - (albums which will almost certainly make classic album status)
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Radiohead - Kid A
Green Day - American Idiot
The White Stripes - Elephant

Tier B and C are In no Particular order

Tier B - (Albums which have a good chance at making classic album status)
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations (would of beaten all the other Muse albums off to be regarded as their best...)
Muse - Absolution (... but a close second)
Coldplay - Viva La Vida... (actually usurped 'A Rush of Blood...'
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (Still holds up with the hype gone)
Turn On The Bright Lights Interpol
The Strokes - Is This It (all there other albums have fallen into complete obscurity)
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
The Killers - Hot Fuss
The National - The Boxer
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand (one album)
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Gorillaz - Demon Days
LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver (and much higher on BEA)
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Outkast - Stankonia
Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night (30-40 places higher on the 00s BEA)
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
System Of A Down - Mezmerize (Replacing Toxicity as SOAD definitive album)
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade (This WILL be Higher)
Keane - Hopes And Fears
Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (annoyingly)
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Tier C - (Albums which have a decent chance at making future classics... most may still make the cut)
Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Coldplay - Parachutes
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Tool - Lateralus
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (But Contra's higher on BEA)
System Of A Down - Toxicity
Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf
Beck - Sea Change
Daft Punk - Discovery
Jay-Z - The Blueprint
Interpol - Antics
Muse - The Resistance
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (whether you like it or not)
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Wolfmother - Wolfmother
Sam's Town - The Killers
P.J. Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (still stragnely sticking around on critics lists)
Kings Of Leon - Because Of The Times
Eminem - The Eminem Show
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
The Libertines - The Libertines (While Up The Bracket falls, the self titled ends up roughly holds the same place as now)
Snow Patrol - Eyes Open
Lupe Fiasco - The Cool
Evanescence - Fallen
Madvillainy - Madvillain
Get Behind Me Satan - The White Stripes
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace - Foo Fighters
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Justice - Cross
Leona Lewis - Spirit (Probably)

Fallen from grace (or fallen significantly from where they are now... and not classics.)
Radiohead - Hail To The Thief (Kid A and In Rainbows erode this albums status over the decades - fallen from top 200)
Radiohead - Amnesiac - (Yeah...)
Muse - Origin Of Symmetry (Much better The Resistance, much lower on the overall chart)
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (Although maybe... but no)
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (Fallen from the top 10 of 2007, just wasn't known enough... and that was before the critics began to forget)
The Libertines - Up The Bracket
Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way
Sigur Rós - Takk... (You're looking at less than 10 charts here)
TV On The Radio - Dear Science,
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
Switchfoot - The Beautiful Letdown
Coldplay - X&Y
The Postal Service - Give Up
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare (You heard 'Solid Gold' by Gang Of Four?... Okay maybe it hasn't got that bad Rolling Eyes)
Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News

And the order they will be in Smile

1. Arcade Fire - Funeral
2. Radiohead - Kid A
3. Green Day - American Idiot
4. The White Stripes - Elephant
5. Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
[All the Tier B albums mixed up with some from the 'Fallen from grace']
[All the Tier C albums mixed up with some from the 'Fallen from grace']
[Everything else]

I'll make a definitive order later Rolling Eyes

here's something let say more concrete :

it's a ranking of the 2000s albums that made the biggest jump into the top 100 since 2 years (until the past month).

1. Elephant - The White Stripes (+35)
2. Absolution - Muse (new entry, more than 38 moves)
3. Funeral - Arcade Fire (+24)
4. Is This It - The Strokes (+22)
5. In Rainbows - Radiohead (+17)
6. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys (New Entry)
7. Hail To The Thief - Radiohead (+12)
8. Origin Of Symmetry - Muse (New entry)
9. Neon Bible - Arcade Fire (new entry)
10. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips (new entry)

other 2000s albums in the top 100 of BEA since last month:

1.Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (#78.).
2. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (#94).
3. Green Day - American Idiot (#100).

of corse the commonly most acclaimed album of the 00s, Kid A, haven't been mentionned because 2 years ago it already reached the 13# (currently 12#).

This makes a lot more sense. I was initially confused by the first post because a lot of those albums are already on the overall chart and some are ranked pretty highly.

i was actually thinking about this recently, listening to blind melon which has been forgotten even though they put out a solid album and several great songs. i think its impossible to tell if an artist will be considered a classic until theyve been dormant for several years, preferably a couple decades, and still exert tremendous, direct influence. youve listed great albums that should be remembered, but may not unless future artists acknowledge them by borrowing from them or reacting against them. there is one 2000s album that has already demonstrated its influence and has already been well integrated, at least in the states, into the culture, but it was put on tier c: daft punk's discovery.

The premise of this thread is that albums which are not in the top 100 albums on BEA may one day suppress albums which are and will be regarded as classics over them.

Everything teodor said plus The White Stripes and Eminem in some capacity, because the two kinds of records that become legendary are ones that are innovative (Is This It, Kala) or iconic. Jack White and Eminem might not be everyone's favorites, they may not be the first push a new sound, but they are the kinds of artists whose style is so remarkably them that kids grow up wanting to be them.
