Kendrick = Three Stacks with a bit of E-40 and Nas thrown in for good measure
A$AP Rocky = 50 Cent meets Bun B meets Cam'ron
Freddie Gibbs = Bun B flow meets Tupac levels of downright realness
Action Bronson = a Kool G. Rap who takes himself less seriously, but with the voice of Ghostface obviously
Joey Bada$$ = boring Nas wannabe
Danny Brown = ODB springs to mind for obvious reasons, but he doesn't overly remind me of anyone
The Underachievers = Binary Star on acid
ScHoolboy Q = 50 Cent with a young Jigga flow
Rick Ross = Biggie obviously, but more Southernized
Big K.R.I.T. = holy shit, this motherfucker Southern as fuck, obviously Bun B with hints of Luda, more conscious though
Roc Marciano = lololololololololololol ain't nobody ever did it like Marc
My current fav rappers:
1. Roc Marciano
2. Kendrick Lamar
3. Freddie Gibbs
4. Action Bronson
5. Quelle Chris
6. Danny Brown
7. ScHoolboy Q
8. Ab-Soul
9. Earl Sweatshirt (but this kid gonna be way higher when he drops Doris, that ish is gonna be ill, mark my words)
10. Big K.R.I.T.
There's way more, but there's a start. Unless the question was implying that rap was better "back in the day" and you were wondering which of the current crop of upstarts could measure up to some golden era boom bap guys, in which case quite a few. Hip-hop's as strong as it's been in at least five years. People aren't even making concessions for radio anymore; in fact, people who are diluting their sound in order to fit in with what they think will be more accessible are finding people don't want that shit. Plus there are old heads dropping some great stuff at the moment, Nas and Ghostface and Deck and Murs and Forty Water all been killing it recently. Hip-hop is in a really fucking good place right now.
Thank you Based God. |
You should give Billy Woods's History Will Absolve Me a listen. I think you will like it.

Start with The Money Store, it's easy to get into. My favorite track is System Blower off that one.

Yeah, forgot about him. He's just Cannibal Ox all over again, but even angrier.
Check my 2010s decade chart.
