In "I Want a Lover I Don' t Have to Love" which is one of my favorite Bright Eyes songs there are some lyrics I'm not sure about.

"You write such pretty words
But life's no storybook
Love's an excuse to get hurt
And to hurt.
Do you like to hurt?
I do, I do

Then hurt me..."
By love he means hurt because me and my friend were fighting about this. She doesn't really doesn't know that much about this kind of music because she listens to like Jay Z and Miley Cyrus. But she says he literally means hurt because he's "emo" and that started a whole other arguement. I think that when he says hurt he means love because he says "Love's an excuse to get hurt" but she thinks he means literally hurt.
What do you think? (I promise I'm not trolling this time)

The Bright Eyes dude (was it Conor something?) is either saying he accepts that to be in love he has to pay the price of being hurt (when things don't turn out that etc) and he would pay that price because he loves whoever.

Or he could be more cynical and be saying "Love, as in the ideal western "relationship" is flawed, it usally brings more hurt than love". Look at a lot of the other songs people write these days and you will see a culture of rabid jealousy. Competition is pushed onto people and a partner is seen as a trophy sometimes. With so much strict rules on relationships, unrealistic expectations by corporate demi-gods (Why is Valentines day only one day? Wouldn't it show love to do stuff you do on valentines another day of the year?) and tv/media telling you to take one person and stick the label "MINE MINE MINE" all over them leads to more hurt than love in some cases.

Anyway... Yeah, he might be sarcastic. The title of the song seems to support the second paragraph too.

One final thing. When I first read the thread this quote came to mind.

"Grief is the price we pay for love."

Queen Elizabeth II
