Totally. Often an imitator can improve upon a formula. And many imitators grow into something better.

Many would say that Blonde Redhead and Yo La Tengo began as lesser versions of Sonic Youth, but then they grew to create their own unique sounds

First of all, I can't believe i actually wrote that Heroes comment. Second, it may take me a few listens to think of Soul Kitchen as a classic. I once thought The Better Life by 3DD was a generic album, but a second listen proved this wrong. So, there is generic music, but it can easily turn into a classic sometimes.
