How the hell does a short attention span have anything to do with it? Certain music loses its magic as you become more and more familiar with it, and encounter different things that interest you more. Tastes develop and change.
What if this... "taste" was completely stationary?
I think "outgrowing" music has a lot to do with personality as well. Some people are more attached to things that are familiar, so will be stimulated by the same old music, no matter how many times they've heard it. At the other extreme, some people only get a high from new experiences and will listen to music only until its novelty value wears off. I bet the people here are closer to the latter extreme... I hope we're not all doomed to a future of experimental jazz and chance music.
