Album of the day (#1067): Urban Hymns by The Verve

I was a bit disappointed with this album.
The singles are great. One of the best selection of singles from any album I'd say (sonnet and bittersweet are two of my all time favourites)

but the rest of the album just sounds like one big psychedelic mess to me

I listened to this album a lot when it came out and then didn't listen to it for 15 years. But I gave it a spin when I was putting together my chart, and it holds up well. It doesn't make my top 40, but it's definitely top 5 for 1997.

'Bittersweet Symphony' is fantastic. 'The Drugs Don't Work' is utter shite. Sadly, the rest of the album is closer to the latter than the former.

I had loved Bitter Sweet Symphony my whole life but never listened to the album. I decided to give it a go a few months ago, totally expecting to love it, but it's just a bunch of mediocre crap following one awesome song.
