I nicked this from Puncture Repair's survey ( https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1iOpRAu...Y/viewform ) since I thought it would make for interesting discussion. Hope he doesn't mind.
Anyways...I'm not familiar enough with the history of music to know for certain though I wouldn't think so. Music seems to stay within its realm at the end of the day, even if it wants to get political. Like, did the punk movement actually do any changing in the world? Probably not. Or the hippie movement? Eh, no. I think music can change mindsets in individuals, but I'm not sure about changing mindsets across society...
Anyways, I'm not that smart at this, discuss.

Actually I think it's more like the other way around. I think changes in society influence music.

Yeah, it does Smile

Especially in the 50's-60's, and the past dozen or so years.

Obligatory Zappa quote:
"There are more love songs than anything else. If songs could make you do something, we'd all love one another."

I think music obviously effects individuals in some way, But utopian music will save the world style stuff is wishful thinking probably.

I'd agree with the society influences music thing. Its likely a tangled web because we'd somehow have to account for all the other things that influence people/politics/society to really know if music was a factor (let alone the main factor) in any kind of change.

I think media like music/film/television mainly just reflects changes in society but also has quite a lot of power to effect them also I'd say. I think people underestimate the power of film and television especially to influence people's attitudes and beliefs.

While there's some truth in this, music certainly helps to propagate change.

I recently saw someone arguing that we might not have gay marriage in this country if it wasn't for Russell T. Davies' work on Doctor Who.
