Haven't been paying a whole lot of attention to this, so I might be missing something, but I'm not sure what the big mystery is. Plane went out of contact and presumably crashed and they can't find it? My guess would be some sort of technical malfunction.
Well I guess the mystery is that it looks like the communication systems were manually turned off and the plane went into the opposite direction of where it was supposed to go. It's hard to imagine a technical malfunction cause that.

My guess would be that the pilot was trying to head to a closer airport. Also, apparently if there's a technical malfunction like an electrical fire or something of that nature, the protocol is to pull out all the main busses and restore the circuits one by one, to isolate the problem. In that case all the communications would go down.
